BBM Mourns Loss of Sponsor/Friend
Corbin, KY (September 13, 2002) This article is being written with a heavy heart after the passing of local businessman and friend James Botner. James was the founder of Corbin Ice Company and served as an associate sponsor to our racing efforts.
Having grown up with his children, this writer has been friends with the Botner family for approximately 30 years. Mr. Botner can be described as one of the nicest and most well respected members of our local community. Although he is best known as a successful businessman, his family serves as evidence that he was an even better husband and father. James was an active member of Central Baptist Church at the time of his passing.
Thanks, James, for all that you have done...not only for Barton Motorsports but for the entire community. You will be missed dearly.
Winchester Speedway Lives up to its Name....Fastest Short Track in America!
Winchester, IN,(June 23, 2003) Billy and his Spray Power racing team arrived in Winchester with high expectations after their disappointing race the weekend prior at Berlin Raceway in Marne, MI. "I can't wait to get out there and race....high banked and fast" stated Billy after finally arriving at the track that proved to be his best outing during the 2002 racing season. Last Fall, Billy found himself running 3rd in the season ending event but dropped out of contention due to mechanical problems. This year, expectations were high.
Barton's #33 Monte Carlo was 7th fastest during the first practice session. With only 10 minutes left in the final practice, Billy came in for tire temps and to scuff his tires for qualifying. Unfortunately, as he left it was obvious there were problems when a small puddle of oil was found dripping from the car. The team fought feverishly but could not locate the problem before qualifying. Fortunately, the Sunoco officials allowed Billy to complete his two lap qualifying run. The problem ended up being a failed power steering line that was replace prior to the start of the race.
After qualifying 12th, Billy had advance the Crown Spray Power Monte Carlo to 8th by lap 5 but a multi-car pile up would end his night. A lap car had dropped an engine, leaving a trail of oil which collected Billy and three other competitor. After hitting the oil, Billy's car backed hart into the turn one wall then took a severe blow to the front end by another car spinning out of control.
The Crown Spray Power team is working hard to rebuild the car and expects to have it race ready by the Anderson race July 12th.

ANOTHER RAIN OUT. Shady Bowl to be Rescheduled
De Graff, OH (May 31, 2003) "All I want to do is race!" stated Billy when asked about the poor weather we've experienced throughout the month of May. As with the Mansfield race, no racing action took place at Shady Bowl Speedway in De Graff, OH this past week. Good news, no repairs necessary on Billy's hot-rod. However, with all the spare time, Billy has had an opportunity to knock out a few of the items on the ole "honey-do" list.
Next race....Berlin (MI) Raceway June 14. Come join us there, if it rains, we'll probably have one mean cook-out. See you there!
IT'S A WASH....Mansfield Rained Out
Mansfield, OH (May 10, 2003) Due to the storms that passed through the Indiana-Ohio region, officials made the decision to postpone the racing action and reschedule at a later date. Therefore, no news to report on this week. Check back after Mt. Lawn for current news on Billy and the Spray Power Racing Team.
Nashville Proves to be Fast, Action Packed - Barton Finishes 12th
Nashville, TN (May 3, 2003) - Billy Barton Motorsports and the Crown Spray Power Racing Team arrived at Nashville Fairground Raceway for the second race of their young season following their impressive run two weeks prior in Anderson, IN. Barton and crew chief Greg Woolums came into the race with confidence even though they had never raced this venue before.
Following practice sessions Friday afternoon, Barton was practicing with speeds in the top ten. Although most were excited with times, Barton and Woolums felt the car could be a little faster. Woolums stated "We (Greg and Billy) met with Frankie Grille near the end of the final practice session before the race to try to find anything to pick up some speed. We made a change to the right front but ran out of time and had to move straight to qualifying leaving the changes untested. Although our qualifying speed was a little disappointing at 14th overall, the change proved effecting under long green flag runs."
Another element of the race that left Billy and Greg on the nervous side was the first timed pit stop of the season. Said Billy "I came in just hoping we could make the necessary changes to the car and not lose a lap but was surprised when my crew was able to change the right sides and add a dump can of fuel as quickly as they did....man was I impressed." Barton and Woolums attempted to try something a little different regarding their pit strategy. Most of the cars came in around lap 80 for their right side tires. This racing series limits the number of tires to 2 per side. Therefore, Greg made the call to keep Billy on the track and come in on the next caution so their tires would be fresher than the other lead lap cars to the end. This proved valuable as Billy was able to move from 16th to 12th by races end. "If I had another 20 laps I might have had something for these guys" Billy stated.
This race was a non-points race and has no bearing on the series or rookie points standing in the Sunoco Super Series. It did, however, provide for a great preparation to the "Civil War on Wheels" at Nashville in October that pays $25,000 to win.
We can't wait.
Barton Qualifies 2nd, Finishes 5th in Yockey 150
Anderson, IN (April 19, 2003) - After an intense winter of preparation, Billy and Team Spray Power finally arrived at Anderson speedway in Anderson, IN for the season opener of the Sunoco Super Series. Although expectations were already high, the excitement was obvious after he was able to qualify 12:04, second overall.
The Sunoco Super Series typically inverts the field to create more racing action in the front. After pole-sitter Joel Kauffman rolled a 6, Barton started 5th, inside 3rd row. Once the green flag was dropped, Billy was able to quickly move into the fourth position. Avoiding two accidents that required bringing out the red flag, Billy was able to move into the third position and remain there for most of the race.
On Lap 77, the lap car of #81 Tom Henley, Jr. slapped the turn 4 wall causing Billy to check up and lose 3 position. By races end, he was able move up one position and obtain his first top of the season.
Billy's 5th place finish was good enough to secure the Hubler Group/Blake Carburetion Rookie of the race award.
